TREE Landfill Odor Control Construction Update

Waste Management recently completed digging horizontal gas collectors and repairing a gas header during the month of July. Company officials indicated that some higher than usual bothersome landfill odors may have been a result of this construction. The construction is not complete and conditions regarding are expected to improve. No construction activities are conducted on the weekends.

Additionally, a new landfill gas booster blower to increase available vacuum to TLR 3 is now operational and is expected further reduce landfill gas odors.

Members of the Community Advisory Committee review one of the many news gas wells that have been installed as part of Waste Management's enhanced landfill gas collection and control program.
Collecting and controlling landfill gas is the primary method of controlling landfill odors. The newly installed landfill gas collection wells have many enhanced features designed to improve gas collection and reduce the likelihood of operational difficulties.
Since July of 2004, Waste Management has invested approximately 4 million dollars in new construction efforts to improve landfill gas collection and control odors.
As can be seen from this photo, sections of the landfill which were previously covered must be trenched in order to install the new piping system which connects to the landfill gas extraction wells. This construction is a labor intensive process, and because it requires uncovering areas of the landfill which previously were covered, can create some instances of unpleasant landfill odors.
